Student Participation
Participation ensures the student is active in the learning process and can apply or demonstrate what they have learned. Suggested strategies for each learning type (MIL-HDBK-2912-2A, 2001; Bloom, 1956) :
- Knowledge- drills and practice to reinforce recall. Use examples and non-examples to reinforce understanding. Provide opportunity to practice knowledge. Naval participants would be required to research and recall via learning management system the various leadership principles.
- Skill-Demonstrate procedure student most perform; have students practice following demonstration. Follow by independent practice of procedure independently.
- Attitude- Use of guided discussions for affective lessons. Participants would be presented with live case studies and mock ethical dilemmas. Each person would be assessed based on their ability or inability to resolve the leadership dilemmas by which they would be presented with
Student Pacing Strategies
Leadership course will support “combined pacing:”it is important to consider the culture of the military and of the officers. Self-Paced with “lock step” in between modules. When the student uploads or completes a portion the training management system will send an email to the facilitator advising of uploaded material for review (written material). Requirements like quizzes will be graded by the system automatically. Once all deliverables are met (inputs) the training management system will unlock the next module and automatically send an email to the student. The reason for this strategy is because the course has a specific didactic line up of modules that have escalating complexity of subject matter as well as reinforcement of concepts. By placing the lock-step, this will prevent the learner to jump in between modules, thus, missing the aforementioned learning strategies.
-
Duration of course: 18-24 months
-
Module completion: three months per module
- Number of modules: eight
- Lessons per module: four to five lessons
